Why Professional Weighing Is Important
Manufacturer limits can interact in complex ways. A professional weighing session measures:
Individual axle weights
Vehicle mass
Trailer mass
Tow ball mass
This ensures every limit is checked, not just one.
If you have any questions about your results or how to adjust your setup, please ask. We are here to help you travel safely and confidently.
Vehicle & Caravan Weight Definitions
This guide explains the common weight terms used when weighing vehicles, caravans, camper trailers, and boats. Understanding these terms helps ensure your setup is safe, legal, and within manufacturer limits.
GVM – Gross Vehicle Mass
What it is: The maximum legal weight of your vehicle when fully loaded.
Why it matters: Exceeding GVM can affect braking, handling, insurance, and legality.
GCM – Gross Combination Mass
What it is: The maximum total weight of the fully loaded vehicle and trailer combined.
Why it matters: Even if your vehicle and trailer are each under their individual limits, you can still be overweight if the combined mass exceeds GCM.
TBM – Tow Ball Mass
What it is: The downward force the trailer applies to the vehicle’s tow ball.
Why it matters: Tow ball mass counts as part of your vehicle’s GVM and rear axle load. Too much or too little TBM can cause instability, poor handling, or sway.
ATM – Aggregate Trailer Mass
What it is: The maximum weight of the trailer when fully loaded and NOT connected to the tow vehicle.
Why it matters: ATM is the primary legal limit for the trailer itself.
GTM – Gross Trailer Mass
What it is: The weight of the trailer when fully loaded AND connected to the tow vehicle.
Why it matters: GTM determines the load on the trailer axles and suspension.
BTC – Braked Towing Capacity
What it is: The maximum weight your vehicle is allowed to tow when the trailer has brakes.
